Comics can be utilized for several purposes such as helping students in the learning process. It can stimulate students to read and can assist them to understand and think. The specific mechanism for that particular use of comics have to be defined in order to increase the understanding of the design of educational or instructionnal comics. We studied the integration, the use and the educational quality of comics in school’s manuels for the 6th grade of elementary, published between 2000-2010 (various disciplines). Findings conclude that the comics catch attention, motivate, provide context, are entertaining and understandable. However, there are very few comics inserted in school’s manuels and their educational value is poor. Overall, the results shows a lack of knowledge about the design of educational comics
In search of protection : sexual minority women in Canadian refugee determination
Canada has accepted refugee claims on the basis of sexual orientation for more than 20
years; however, research suggests that claims brought by women on the basis of sexual
orientation have not always received fair adjudication. To ensure equitable access to
protection for sexual minority women, an analysis of their risk of persecution must incorporate
gender and other social and cultural factors that influence their experiences. Based on a case
study of claims brought by women on the basis of sexual orientation between 2010 and 2013,
which were subsequently rejected by the Canadian Immigration and Refugee board, this
research identifies decision making that poses obstacles to sexual minority women’s access to
refugee protection. The findings from this case study demonstrate that an intersectional
analysis, which considers various forms of oppression within a particular social context, is
crucial to a complete and informed assessment of the risk of persecution for sexual minority
women. In light of these findings, this paper proposes that an intersectional analysis
accompany continued training for Immigration and Refugee Board members on issues
particular to sexual minorities
The purpose of this research is to examine the evolution of children with problematic sexual behaviour following their participation in a group treatment program. The sample was made up of 43 children (33 boys and 10 girls) with an average age of 9 years, 7 months (SD = 1.85) The evolution of the children is measured administering behavioural rating instruments, both before and after the treatment program, on multiple dimensions of problematic sexual behaviour, externalizing and internalizing problems and social skills. The actual level of the children’s participation is documented. The results indicate improvement for a significant portion of the children treated, particularly for those with problematic sexual behaviour, internalizing problems and social skills. This study highlights that treatment group might be a relevant choice of treatment modality. Induction of systemic oxidative stress leads to brain oedema in portacaval shunted rats
Background & Aims The pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is multifactorial and often associated with the
development of brain oedema. In addition to ammonia playing a central role, systemic oxidative stress is believed to
aggravate the neuropsychological effects of ammonia in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD). The aim of this study
was to (i) induce systemic oxidative stress in hyperammonaemic portacaval anastomosed (PCA) rats by inhibiting the
antioxidant glutathione using Dimethyl maleate (DEM) and (ii) investigate whether a synergistic relationship between
ammonia and oxidative stress contributes to the pathogenesis of brain oedema in CLD. Methods Four-week PCA and
sham-operated rats received DEM (0.4–4 mg/kg/day) for the last 10 days before sacrifice when oxidative stress markers
[reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA)] were assessed in blood and frontal cortex. Brain water
content was measured using a specific gravimetric technique. Results Dimethyl maleate induced an increase in ROS and
MDA in the blood, but not in the brain, of the PCA rats, compared with non-treated PCA rats. This was accompanied with
an increase in brain water content (PCA+DEM: 78.45 ± 0.13% vs. PCA: 77.38 ± 0.11%, P < 0.001). Higher doses of DEM
induced systemic oxidative stress in sham-operated controls, but brain oedema did not develop. Conclusions Dimethyl
maleate provoked systemic, not central, oxidative stress in PCA rats, resulting in the development of brain oedema.
Independently, hyperammonaemia and systemic oxidative stress do not precipitate brain oedema; therefore, our findings
sustain that a synergistic effect between hyperammonaemia and systemic oxidative stress is responsible for the development of brain oedema in HE
This thesis documents a codesign approach to cyberhealth by looking at the experiences of participants. In a codesign approach, those who have an interest in the product or service being designed collaborate in knowledge building and in designing the product or service. They are seen as experts of their own experience with the product or service. Their involvement and contribution are key to the success of the strategy, which is why it is important to take their experience into account in this type of approach. The meaning of "experience," in this case, is taken from Dewey (1980): experience is that which the subject considers significant, as distinct from what is generally observable. We also applied the course-of-action semiological framework (Theureau 2004, 2006, 2015) by having the subject participate in the description of their experience, thus providing an intrinsic description of what was significant. The codesign research project documented here aimed to design a digital tool to facilitate the search for caregiver help for elderly people who can no longer function independently. The author was part of the research team as a designer and professional researcher. The project consisted of eight codesign sessions and three advisor committee sessions in eleven administrative regions in Quebec from May 2017 to May 2018 (13 months). A total of 74 individuals participated in the codesign, from three categories: caregivers, health-care and social services professionals, and members of community organizations who work with caregivers. Participants in the project were considered codesigners, on the same level as members of the research team (including the author). As part of this thesis, we documented the course-of-action of 20 individuals, including nine caregivers, four health-care and social services professionals and seven members of community organizations. We undertook an emergent thematic analysis of the participants' course-of-action for the project as a whole. The items participants found significant in their experience were grouped into five themes: Adverse interactions with others, Destabilization, Mutual learning, Deriving personal benefit, and Constraints and extrinsic effects of the situation, the last one being the most frequently mentioned in the participants' descriptions. We also applied an emergent thematic analysis to a specific cognitive component of the course-of-action--engagement (the participant's concerns at a specific point in time as a function of the situational element being considered)--of all participants for the project overall. Three overarching themes were identified: Engagement oriented towards one's needs (personal and professional), Engagement relative to the situation, and Tool design, the last one having relatively less importance than the other two, particularly for members of community organizations. Finally, we empirically explored the most recent works of Theureau (2015), which refine some cognitive components--the unit (what the subject says, does or thinks at a specific point in time), the representamen (the element of the situation that is being considered at that moment) and the interpretant (the appropriation by the subject of that moment)--into subcomponents, for three participants, one from each category. This analysis revealed links in the participants' course-of-action that helped to understand their experience in detail. The results highlight, in particular, that these three participants were mobilized by the reinterpretation of elements they thought were shared among this community dedicated to caregiving. Their participation was more focused on service for caregivers than on the design of the tool. Overall, the results suggest that the design of the cyberhealth tool is not what stands out as the most significant aspect of the experience for the participants as a whole. The importance of engagement relative to the situation, grouping together the extrinsic constraints of the situation, moments of destabilization or mutual learning and the disagreements between participants, is what they retained from their experience. We suggest that to optimize codesign projects, it is important to offer an experience that participants find satisfying. After all, they are key to the strategy. We need them. Here, we explore prospects to continue the research in view of optimizing the codesign strategy and offering participants a satisfying experience. Some leads may seem obvious or are described elsewhere in the literature. They are noteworthy here because they were inspired by what was perceived as significant in the participants' experience, what was important to them. Finally, we cast a reflective and critical eye on the author's involvement in the project and the role of the designer, which aligns with Manzini's (2015) perspective: the designer as facilitator helping the codesigners contribute significantly to the strategy and appreciate their experience. The designer as creator of a satisfying experience for the participants in codesign
The moderating effect of frequent singing on voice aging
The effects of aging on voice production are well documented, including changes in loudness, pitch
and voice quality. However, one important and clinically relevant question that remains concerns the
possibility that the aging of voice can be prevented or at least delayed through non-invasive methods.
Indeed, discovering natural means to preserve the integrity of the human voice throughout aging could
have a major impact on the quality of life of elderly adults. The objective of this study was therefore to
examine the potentially positive effect of singing on voice production. To this aim, a group of 72
healthy non-smoking adults (20-93 years-old) was recruited and separated into three groups based on
their singing habits. Several voice parameters were assessed (f0 mean, f0 SD, f0 minimum and f0
maximum, mean amplitude and amplitude SD, jitter, shimmer, and harmonic to noise ratio) during the
sustained production of vowel /a/. Other parameters were assessed during standardized reading passage
(speaking fundamental frequency (SFF), SFF SD). As was expected, age effects were found on most
acoustic parameters with significant sex differences. Importantly, moderation analyses revealed that
frequent singing moderates the effect of aging on most acoustics parameters. Specifically, in frequent
singers, there was no decrease in the stability of pitch and amplitude with age, suggesting that the voice
of frequent singers remains more stable in aging than the voice of non-singers, and more generally,
providing empirical evidence for a positive effect of singing on voice in aging
Effects of age on the amplitude, frequency and perceived quality of voice
The manner and extent to which voice amplitude and frequency control mechanisms change with age is not well understood. The related question of whether the assessment of one’s own voice evolves with age, concomitant with the acoustical changes that the voice undergoes, also remains unanswered. In the present study, we characterized the aging of voice production mechanisms (amplitude, frequency), compared the aging voice in different experimental contexts (vowel utterance, connected speech) and examined the relationship between voice self-assessment and age-related voice acoustical changes. Eighty healthy adults (20 to 75 years old) participated in the study, which involved computation of several acoustical measures of voice (including measures of fundamental frequency, voice amplitude, and stability) as well as self-assessments of voice. Because depression is frequent in older adults, depression and anxiety scores were also measured. As was expected, analyses revealed age effects on most acoustical measures. However, there was no interaction between age and the ability to produce high/low voice amplitude/frequency, suggesting that voice amplitude and frequency control mechanisms are preserved in aging. Multiple mediation analyses demonstrated that the relationship between age and voice self-assessment was moderated by depression and anxiety scores. Taken together, these results reveal that while voice production undergoes important changes throughout aging, the ability to increase/decrease the amplitude and frequency of voice are preserved, at least within the age range studied, and that depression and anxiety scores have a stronger impact on perceived voice quality than acoustical changes themselves
TLR2 and TLR4 triggering exerts contrasting effects with regard to HIV-1 infection of human dendritic cells and subsequent virus transfer to CD4+ T cells
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Recognition of microbial products through Toll-like receptors (TLRs) initiates inflammatory responses orchestrated by innate immune cells such as dendritic cells (DCs). As these cells are patrolling mucosal surfaces, a portal of entry for various pathogens including human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1), we investigated the impact of TLR stimulation on productive HIV-1 infection of DCs and viral spreading to CD4+ T cells.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We report here that engagement of TLR2 on DCs increases HIV-1 transmission toward CD4+ T cells by primarily affecting <it>de novo </it>virus production by DCs. No noticeable and consistent effect was observed following engagement of TLR5, 7 and 9. Additional studies indicated that both HIV-1 infection of DCs and DC-mediated virus transmission to CD4+ T cells were reduced upon TLR4 triggering due to secretion of type-I interferons.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>It can thus be proposed that exposure of DCs to TLR2-binding bacterial constituents derived, for example, from pathogens causing sexually transmissible infections, might influence the process of DC-mediated viral dissemination, a phenomenon that might contribute to a more rapid disease progression.</p
